September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month in Canada

In striving to educate and train people of the province in Suicide Prevention, The Canadian Mental Health Association-Newfoundland and Labrador in partnership with Safer Mindfulness Inc. conducted an eight-week pilot program, “Suicide Prevention Through Mindfulness Training”, in St. John’s during May and June of 2021.

The VOCM Cares Foundation and Pennecon Limited provided funding support to implement this innovative study combining the practice of mindfulness with suicide prevention. Initially, 24 people were involved, including individuals who were referred by psychiatrists, psychologists, and peer-support groups. Participant ages ranged from 21 to 75 years.

A random selection of participants responded to 18 questions during the first and last sessions, indicating changes over the eight weeks, for both quantitative and qualitative results. The reduction in intensity of suicidal thoughts from the first session to the last was a marked 41.7%.
