Canadian Mental Health Association-Newfoundland and Labrador (CMHA-NL), is a provincial division of CMHA—the nationwide leader and champion for mental health. Our mission is to facilitate access to the resources people require to maintain and improve mental health and community integration, build resilience, and support recovery from mental illness. CMHA-NL’s provincial head office is located in St. John’s with regional offices located in Grand Falls-Windsor (Central) and Stephenville (Western).

Support vs. ‘Toxic Positivity’

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

Offering someone ‘toxic positivity’ can often shut down the conversation by making them feel they shouldn’t share their ‘bad’ feelings. Supporting others through validation can let them know that their negative feelings are okay and they are not alone. The chart below, by Whitney Hawkins Goodman, LMFT, provides examples of validating statements versus toxic positivity.
