December 5, 2011 – On November 30th, an outside party inserted a malicious script within the CMHA National website. The script has caused the website to go down as well as the web family sites on the national system. If you have visited these sites, the script may have inserted malicious programs onto your computer. However, the CMHA-NL Division website is not affected as we are not a part of this system. We are advising the public not to visit the CMHA National website or other Division sites, or visit links on this site that may redirect you to those sites, until the issues are resolved.

November 15, 2011 – On November 8th, Memorial University held a free public forum, “How the Media Deal with Mental Illness.” Dr. Noreen Golfman, a frequent commentator on media issues, moderated a panel composed of representatives from the media, the justice system, and mental health organizations. September 29, 2011 – In partnership with the Department of Health and Community Services, CHANNAL, the Schizophrenia Society of NL, Eastern Health, and Jeremy Bennett, on September 14th, 2011, CMHA-NL participated in the proclamation signing ceremony for Mental Illness Awareness Week 2011 with the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Q.C., Minister of Health and Community Services and MHA for Carbonear – Harbour Grace.

Mental Illness Awareness Week  is a national week held annually during the first week in October to highlight recovery from mental illness by people of all walks of life. Click here to meet the Faces of Mental Illness Awareness Week 2011.

In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week 2011, which runs from October 2nd to the 8th, CMHA-NL would like to invite you to join us for the following events.

September 30th – Mindscapes Art Exhibit Launch and Reception – Starting at 5:30 PM in the Rogue Gallery at the Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John’s

October 1st, 4th, and 5th, 12 to 5 PM – Mindscapes Exhibit viewing times in the Rogue Gallery at the Eastern Edge

October 5th – Book signing with Nancy Ratey – Starting at 7 PM at Chapters, St. John’s.

October 6th – Mindscapes Gala – Starting at 6:30 PM at the Delta Hotel, St. John’s. Tickets are $100.

CMHA-NL Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2010-2011

Date: Friday, October 7th, 2011

Time: 2 PM

Location: The multipurpose room on the first floor of the CNIB building at 70 the Boulevard, St. John’s.

The CMHA-NL AGM is free and open to the public, all are welcome. However, we ask that if you plan to attend please RSVP by October 3rd to Paul Fifield at pfifield at cmhanl dot ca or 738-2110.  Light refreshments will be served.

Please be advised that you must be a paid member in order to vote at the AGM. Membership can be paid or renewed at the entrance of the AGM or by downloading and completing the Membership Form and submitting along with payment. Note that available parking around the CNIB building is limited, however there is free parking available off the Boulevard near the Quidi Vidi Lake bandstand and in the Dominion parking lot on Lake Avenue.

August 17, 2011 – During Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW), October 2nd – 8th, CMHA-NL will be hosting a variety of events featuring renowned author and ADHD Coach Nancy Ratey. For more details, click here to visit our Special Events page.

August 9, 2011 – CMHA-NL is currently hiring two Regional Coordinators, one in Grand-Falls Windsor and one in Stephenville. To read the details of the job ad, please click here. The deadline for this competition is the close of business on August 17th, 2011.

July 22, 2011 – CMHA-NL is now accepting applications/nominations for the following annual Provincial Awards: the Mental Health Research Scholarship and the Mental Health Leadership Award. For more information about the awards and the guidelines for entry, click here. The closing date for 2011 award applications/nominations is September 15, 2011.

June 3, 2011 – Starting on Monday, June 13, 2011, CMHA-NL will be operating on a summer schedule. Our summer office hours will be 8:30 AM to 4 PM, Monday to Friday. We will return to our regular operating hours of 8:30 to 4:30 on Monday, September 12th, 2011.

CMHA-NL is currently seeking artists living with or recovering from mental illness to enter its Mindscapes art exhibit and auction. The theme of this year’s exhibition is “Expressions of Hope.” All paintings and sculptures that fit our size criteria will be considered for our juried show.

April 12, 2011 – During Mental Health Week 2011, CMHA-NL and the Schizophrenia Society of NL are collaborating to hold a one-day workshop and a free public presentation on building skills to cope with compassion fatigue.Both the workshop and presentation will be delivered by Diana Tikasz, an Associate with Workshops for the Helping Professions (WHP), part of the Kingston, Ontario-based Compassion Fatigue Solutions.

On Tuesday April 5th, 2011, starting at 5 PM join us for a fabulous evening of music and gourmet soup at the St. John’s Convention Centre as we raise awareness and funds in support of CMHA-NL and other organizations who are working to fight youth homelessness and poverty in our community.

Working Together For Dignity and Inclusion:

Personal and Professional Perspectives on Mental Illness, Stigma and Recovery

In celebration of Social Work Month, March 2011, the Newfoundland & Labrador Association of Social Workers (NLASW) and the Canadian Mental Health Association, NL Division (CMHA-NL), will be holding a panel discussion to present personal and professional perspectives on mental illness, stigma and recovery. Facilitated by CMHA-NL Executive Director and social worker, George Skinner, the panel will include both persons with lived experience of mental illness and family members.

Location: Health Sciences Centre, Main Auditorium, St. John’s

This event is free and no registration is required. It is open to anyone who might be interested in learning more about these issues, including social workers, students, other health professionals,  and persons with mental health issues and their families.
