October 3 – 9, 2010

In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 3 – 9, 2010), join CMHA-NL as we raise awareness about mental illness and recovery with the following exciting events:

Mindscapes Launch and Reception – October 1, 2010 starting at 5:00 PM at the Anna Templeton Centre, St. John’s. Mindscapes is an  art exhibit with featured works by persons living with mental health issues. The Mindscapes Exhibit will run from October 1 – 5th at the Anna Templeton Centre.

Friday, Oct. 1: 5 – 7 PM (Launch and reception)

Saturday, Oct. 2, and Sunday, Oct. 3: 12 – 5 PM

Monday, Oct. 4, and Tuesday, Oct. 5: 11 AM – 3 PM

All pieces will be auctioned at the 4th Annual CMHA-NL Mindscapes Gala on October 6, 2010.

 

Mindscapes Newfoundland and Labrador, our Fourth Annual Fundraising Gala, on Wednesday, October 6th starting at 6:30 PM at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s . This year’s gala will feature key note speaker CBC Radio’s Shelagh Rogers. Tickets are $95 each for a wonderful evening of dinner, live and silent auctions, music, and inspiring dialogue. All proceeds will help support the work of CMHA-NL in this province.

Schizophrenia Society Conference: July 26-28

The Schizophrenia Society of Canada (SSC) and the Schizophrenia Society of Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) are co-hosting the annual national conference in St. John’s from July 26th to the 28th at the Delta Hotel. The theme for this year’s conference is “Social Inclusion: Well Beyond Recovery.” For more information or to register, click here to download the SSC/SSNL conference registration form.

SSNL is also sponsoring a Family/Consumer Day, “In It Together,” on Monday, July 26, 2010, just one day prior to the National Conference. Please be advised that there has been a change from the previously advertised venue for this event: the event will now be held at The Masonic Temple on Cathedral Street in St. John’s.

June 25, 2010 – On September 27 and 28th, 2010, at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s, the Association of Registered Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador (ARNNL) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses’ Union (NLNU) will be holding their Innovations 2010 Conference. The theme for this year’s conference is “Mental Health: Our Common Denominator.” This conference will be of interest to health professionals, persons with mental illness and their families, and to anyone with an interest in mental health and mental illness–all are welcome to register and attend! June 11, 2010 – Heidi Edgar, CMHA-NL’s Justice Project Coordinator, was recently interviewed by the Telegram about the housing and other issues faced by inmates at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary with mental illnesses upon re-entering the community. May 20, 2010 – The Canadian Paraplegic Association (CPA) has started a new social group for youth between the ages of 18 and 30 with spinal cord injuries, and mobility and other disabilities. May 3, 2010 – Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Week (May 3 – 9) all across Canada. Join CMHA-NL as we celebrate this year’s theme, “building your mental health: one support at a time.” The following events will be taking place during Mental Health Week:

Launch of Out Loud

CMHA-NL, in partnership with Breakwater Books, Ltd., announces the official launch of Out Loud: Essays on Mental Illness, Stigma and Recovery. The launch will take place on Tuesday, May 4th from 5 to 7 PM at the Johnson GEO Centre in St. John’s. All are welcome. For more information on this event, click on the image below.

This book is a collection of over 50 personal essays by Newfoundlanders and Labradorians from all walks of life. There are essays by those who have experienced mental illness themselves, by family and friends, by community members, and by professionals who deal with mental illness. The voices here are ones of hope, pain, and honesty. The true meaning in this collection is found in the willingness of the essayists to step forward and share their experiences in hopes of lessening stigma and broadening the conversation about mental illness.

Out Loud also contains an introduction by Ramona Dearing, author of the short story collection So Beautiful and host of CBC Radio Noon. Mental Health Week Symposium
