Mental Illness Awareness Week 2012
Mental Illness Awareness Week is an annual national public education campaign designed to help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness.
Mindscapes features works of art by persons with lived experience of mental illness. The theme of this year's exhibit is "Perspectives of Recovery" and it will showcase selected works from artists across Newfoundland and Labrador. Click here or on the image above to download the full size poster Our sixth annual fundraising Gala will be held on Thursday, October 4th, starting at 6 PM at the Delta Hotel, 120 New Gower Street, St. John's. The Gala will be hosted by Republic of Doyle's Marthe Bernard and feature keynote speaker Louise Bradley, President and CEO of the Mental Health Commission of Canada. The Gala will also include the Mindscapes art exhibit, and live and silent auctions. We are pleased to announce that Bell Aliant is sponsoring CMHA-NL's Mindscapes Exhibit and Gala again this year. About Louise Bradley, MS, RN, CHE Originally from Eastern Canada, Louise became a Registered Nurse in Newfoundland. She also studied at Dalhousie University and later obtained a Master of Science with a specialization in Mental Health from Northeastern University, Boston. Though Louise’s experience ranges from Community Mental Health to Forensic and Corrections Health Care, she has worked primarily in the Mental Health field as a frontline nurse, administrator, researcher and educator. Louise moved to Alberta to become the Senior Operating Officer for the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton and, in the spring of 2009, joined the Mental Health Commission of Canada as its Chief Operating Officer. For 5 years, she was also a surveyor with Accreditation Canada, and is both a Certified Health Executive and an adjunct professor with the University of Alberta Faculty of Nursing. In April 2010, Louise became President and CEO of the Mental Health Commission of Canada.
About Marthe Bernard "Since the age of ten, Marthe Bernard has been acting in numerous independent films and stage productions in St. John's. In 2008 she landed the role of Tinny on CBC's "Republic of Doyle", which is now entering its fourth season. She has been involved locally with White Rooster Theatre playing the roles of "Molly" in Sex, The Rules Of (2009) and "Scout" in Kingdom (2012). She starred in the recently released feature film "Beat Down" opposite Robb Wells, for which she won a Best Actress Award at the First Glance Film Festival in Los Angeles.

On Tuesday, April 17th at the St. John’s Convention Centre, the annual Hot Soup, Cool Jazz event was held to raise awareness and funds in support of CMHA-NL and other organizations who are working to fight youth homelessness and poverty in our community. Mindscapes Art Exhibit Launch and Reception
Mindscapes is CMHA-NL's annual art exhibit that features works of art by persons with lived experience of mental illness. The theme of this year's exhibit was "Expressions of Hope" and it showcased selected works from artists across Newfoundland and Labrador. The Mindscapes launch and reception took place on Friday, September 30th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the Rogue Gallery at the Eastern Edge Gallery in St. John's, and the exhibit ran there until October 5th. The artwork was sold by auction at CMHA-NL's Mindscapes Gala on Thursday, October 6th. Our fifth annual fundraising Gala was held on Thursday, October 6th, starting at 6:30 PM at the Delta Hotel, 120 New Gower Street, St. John's. The Gala featured keynote speaker Nancy Ratey, the Mindscapes art exhibit, and live and silent auctions.
About Nancy Ratey Ms. Ratey is internationally recognized as one of the foremost authorities on personal and professional coaching for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Ratey has co-authored two books, Tales from the Workplace and Coaching College Students with AD/HD: Issues and Answers. Her latest book, The Disorganized Mind: Coaching Your ADHD Brain to Take Control of Your Time, Tasks, and Talents, was published in April of 2008. Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 3 – 9, 2010)
In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week 2010, CMHA-NL raised awareness about mental illness and recovery with the following exciting events: The Mindscapes Exhibit Launch and Reception was held on October 1, 2010 starting at 5:00 PM at the Anna Templeton Centre, St. John’s, and the public exhibit ran until October 5th at the same location. Mindscapes is an art exhibit with featured works by persons living with mental health issues. All pieces were auctioned at the 4th Annual CMHA-NL Mindscapes Gala on October 6, 2010. Mindscapes Newfoundland and Labrador, our Fourth Annual Fundraising Gala, was held on Wednesday, October 6th starting at 6:30 PM at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s. This year’s gala featured key note speaker CBC Radio host Shelagh Rogers, who spoke about her own experience with depression. The gala drew a sold-out crowd and it was a huge success! All proceeds helped support the work of CMHA-NL in this province. Thank you to all our guests and sponsors. Miles for Minds

On October 6 th, 2010, during Mental Illness Awareness Week 2010, Chris and Dylan Penney crossed the finish line at the Town Hall in Conception Bay South, NL. After a four month bike journey from Nanaimo, BC, to Manuals, NL, Chris and Dylan presented George Skinner, Executive Director of CMHA-NL, with a cheque for more than $35,000 in support of our work on mental health and mental illness. The Penney family, CMHA-NL staff, representatives from the media, and many other supporters were on hand to congratulate Chris and Dylan on their inspiring personal accomplishment and commitment to a great cause. The final amount raised from the event was over $38,000. CMHA-NL honoured the Penney Family at our Gala on October 6 th for their tremendous contribution and ongoing commitment to our work.

October 8, 2009 – CMHA-NL's Third Annual Fundraising Gala During Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 4 – 10, 2009), CMHA-NL held its third annual fundraising gala at the Battery Hotel and Suites on Thursday, October 8th. For more information, please click the image below to view the flyer.
The event featured live and silent auctions with art by Jean Claude Roy and the Waterford Art Program. All proceeds helped support the work of CMHA-NL in this province.
October 9, 2008 – CMHA-NL's Second Annual Fundraising Gala In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 5 – 11, 2008), CMHA-NL held an evening of dinner and entertainment at our Second Annual Fundraising Gala at the Delta Hotel, St. John's. See the original Gala flyer for more details. Nearly 200 people joined CMHA-NL Staff and Board at the Gala. We have received numerous rave reviews for the performances by both Joel Hynes and Ron Hynes, as well as the fantastic meal. It was an enjoyable night for all! Some highlights of the evening: CMHA-NL recognizes the following individuals: Ms. Sharon Barnes, a long serving CMHA board member and volunteer with CMHA at the national and provincial levels is this year's recipient of the Pottle Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to CMHA-NL and mental health in general. Mr. Edward Greenspon, the Editor of the Globe and Mail, was the recipient of this year's Media award for outstanding achievement and contribution in addressing issues pertaining to mental health care and mental illness in our country. This was evidenced by the recent week-long series in the Globe and Mail on mental illness in Canada. CMHA-NL would like to acknowledge its support for local mental health research being conducted in the Faculty of Medicine. Mr. Jeff Kelland, a Master's student, has received a research grant from CMHA-NL to critically examine the state of mental health research in Canada. In total we raised almost $16,000.00 that evening. CMHA-NL would like to thank all those who participated and made it such a special and successful evening. On Monday October 1st, 2007, more then 250 people joined CMHA-NL, event sponsors and partners for an enlightening and entertaining evening at the Fairmont Newfoundland as Margaret Trudeau shared her personal story of recovery from mental illness.
